IP Strategy

Sheema has over 20 years of experience in Intellectual Property (IP), first as an R&D scientist in drug delivery at a start-up which culminated in a number of worldwide patents. 

She then switched to IP law and served as a patent agent with national and local firms, assisting multinationals, government agencies and SMEs. Her practice includes the drafting and prosecution of patents in pharmaceuticals, chemistry, physics, biotech, mechanical engineering, business and software methods and artificial intelligence, before CIPO, the USPTO and WIPO. 

Her practice also includes industrial designs and plant breeders rights. She has assisted SMEs assess their IP through patentability searches and landscape analysis. Sheema has also written extensively about IP and innovation for local and international publications, as well as the Globe and Mail’s Report on Business. She holds a PhD in Chemical Physics from Harvard and served as a post-doc at MIT.
