We’d like to introduce you to Sheema Khan, IP Strategist and Patent Agent at Stratford Intellectual Property

by: Madeleine Eisert

As managers and executives at Stratford, we’ve led departments, divisions and whole organizations through growth and change. We have the “stars and scars” to offer meaningful, practical guidance or serve hands-on if that’s required.

Beyond our credentials, what sets us apart are the values we share and the ways we work. Every member of our team has a passion for giving back and helping organizations reach their goals. It’s why clients often tell us that when they met our people, they knew they wanted to do business with us.

To help you get to know us a little better, we sat down with some of our team members and interviewed them on everything from professional experience and obstacles to extracurricular activities and playlist recommendations. We thought you may appreciate seeing the personal side of our team through their shared personal insights, recommendations and hobbies.

We’d like to introduce you to Sheema Khan, Patent Agent and IP Strategist at Stratford Intellectual Property.

🚧 What’s one of the biggest obstacles you’ve had to overcome as it relates to your career?

The very first obstacle I faced was completing my PhD in Chemical Physics at Harvard. This challenge was one of the most rewarding, I got emotional when I finally had the degree in my hand.

My kids are older now, but, it was always a struggle to find balance between work and family when they were younger. Professionally – it was the change from being an R&D scientist to becoming a patent agent in my late 30s. A whole new career – hours of studying, learning, etc. I remember studying for my Patent Agent exams while pregnant and, afterwards, while nursing.

Another challenge: being in charge of the patent department of a small IP firm, where I had to learn all aspects of Canadian, US and International patent law – along with learning about best practices for running a department. It was, however, the best experience.

📣 What GIF best describes you?

📣 Do you have any favourite quotes?

“Stand up for justice – whether it is against yourself, your family, the rich or the poor”

– The Qur’an

🤔 If there is one thing you hope your clients gain from working with you, what would you want it to be?

After working with me, I hope my clients gain an appreciation for the importance of IP in the success of their business.
